Description:
This workshop will introduce both new and experienced sugarmakers to management practices that can increase both sugar production and forest health in maple stands. First, Joseph Orefice and Yale Forests staff will teach attendees to assess the density of their maple stands to inform silvicultural decisions. We’ll then delve into silvicultural techniques for not only promoting sugar production, but also the health and diversity of the forest for years to come.
Audubon Forester, Rosa Goldman, will provide insights into bird-friendly sugarbush management and introduce bird-friendly maple certification.
Throughout the workshop, attendees will tour multiple thinning sites, comparing maple-focused thinnings to crown thinnings that prioritized species diversity. CT Forester Josh Miller will lead a practical discussion on timber harvesting planning and operations, focusing on the Yale Forest sugarbush he harvested just last year. Specifically, attendees will learn how harvesting timber can be done in a way to ensure residual tree health and stand productivity.
